There are a variety of simple methods we have discussed in other informative articles we have written on our website related to sleeping concerns, but one method we have noticed is a growing trend of people using sleep meditation music to help quieten their minds and aid them in falling asleep in a more relaxed state.

Meditation in its simplest explanation is essentially a quiet time one would make use of, without distractions, to calm one’s mind and “zone out” from the outside world. This for many is hard to achieve as it requires a certain level of concentration to “control one’s thoughts,” as to not become distracted. However, meditation has travelled a long way and is no longer used purely for religious reasons.

How Is Sleep Meditation Used?

Modern meditation music in the 20th century came about when composers begin to combine meditation techniques and concepts with music. It has since become a widely used method to induce sleep for those who struggle to fall asleep naturally.

The emphasis in this article, however, is not so much on “meditation”, but more about getting the brain to slip into a deeper sleep state. This can be achieved by way of digital techniques, such as binaural beats and certain frequencies that are not heard by the naked ear. These beats and frequencies are then overlaid with pleasant soothing music that will not distract the mind when trying to achieve the ideal frequency, which happens when you begin to fall asleep.

Composers cleverly use these subtle yet effective techniques that are best delivered through a set of comfortable headphones, or better still, in-ear earphones, in order for the brain to obtain the maximum benefit of the music and its frequencies.

When your mind is awake and alert, this is considered the Beta state. When your mind is relaxed, you are essentially in the Alpha state, and when you are asleep your mind will now be in a slow frequency called the Delta state. There is an even deeper state, and this is typically when you are dreaming, and is known as the Theta state.

The purpose of sleep meditation music is to alter your state of mind to the right frequency in order for you to fall asleep. The most common frequency used along with binaural beats is 432 Hz. The human ear can detect tones at this frequency quite easily, and the brain responds by achieving the Delta state.

Binaural Beats uses 2 tones at a frequency lower than 30 Hz, which is the lowest audible frequency the naked ear can hear. However the brain is able to detect these tones, and as a result, can alter its current state to match that of the binaural frequency.
