Fluffy Pillows And Clean Soft Sheets – How To Bring The Hotel Experience To Your Bedroom

Have you ever wondered why hotel beds are just so incredibly comfortable? Dreamy even. It doesn’t matter if you stay in a cheap motel or at an uber-luxe hotel overlooking the V&A Waterfront – if the mattress isn’t comfortable, it can ruin your entire trip. One can easily make this comparison when climbing into one’s own bed at night, after having been away and made use of a hotel.

Let’s dissect for a minute what makes hotel beds so comfortable. See, it’s not just about having a good quality bed. Sure that’s the most important aspect of a good nights’ sleep. However, the technology that goes into designing and manufacturing such beds are the fundamentals of what sells the bed… the way it feels for your body.

There are many variances of style, technology and cost. From orthopaedic, to memory foam, to spring thickness, pockets and pillow tops. Focus is put mostly on support and lifespan of the mattress. Hence why warranties also play a significant factor when selecting the best mattress for you.

Sheets and Pillows

Aside from the technology and comfort of the mattress, there is another very important aspect to consider. Have you guessed it? Hopefully, you guessed right. It’s the bedding! No good having a comfortable bed whilst your bedding just doesn’t feel good. It’s all about feel at this point.

There are a variety of fabrics to choose from, but the most common is cotton. However, not all cotton is the same. There are certain ways to establish the type of cotton you would want to use. Terms such as Ply, Staple and Weave, describe the design and quality. The quality of the fabric is determined by the fibres used to make the fabric.

With bed sheets, the longer the fibre, the better the quality of the fabric. When fibres are twisted together to create two-ply threads, it results in a looser weave that is heavier and rougher and has a shorter lifespan. The staple length is commonly referred to as the length of the fibre.

It is typically known that the higher the thread count, the better the quality. This isn’t always the case. You may find a high thread count of around 350-400 at a bargain price, however, it may not mean that it’s better quality than a thread count of 250 with a higher price tag.

It is best to do some research in terms of the variety of cotton fibres so that when you shop, you have a better understanding of what to look for. One of the highest quality cotton one can find is Egyptian cotton. It consists of the longest staple, producing luxuriously soft, yet extremely durable sheets.

Certain hotels have a rule of thumb when it comes to sheet quality which is usually Egyptian cotton with a 300 thread count. The recommendation is 3 sheets – a fitted and 2 flat sheets.

Another aspect to consider is your colour scheme. White is so accommodating and blends with every background or theme. Like getting into your favourite white fluffy robe after a hot bath, you feel refreshed and amazing. Light colours can do just as well to break up the clinical look, and a really great idea would be to incorporate light colours with pillowcases and throws.

When it comes to pillows, overdo it a little bit. Have a variety of feather and down, two down-alternative pillows and a boudoir pillow. That way, you can arrange pillows for your sleep preference. Three to five pillows is a good variety but anything more becomes too overwhelming.

The Mattress

Generally speaking, the queen size is ideally the smallest size you want to consider for you and your partner, and if you or your partner is blessed with being tall, then an extra length should be a choice preference. Most hotels elect for king size beds, as it gives the illusion of immense luxury. After all, you would want to sleep like a king… or queen for that matter!

Much consideration goes into how you sleep – are you a back sleeper or predominantly a side sleeper? The firmness is what most people tend to look for and depending on your sleeping preference, can influence your decision as to what feels good.

But so often it is found that how it “feels” at the time of testing, isn’t necessarily going to be the ideal bed for you. Many stories can be found just searching the web about someone’s experience with a new bed, and how after only a short period of time using the newly purchased mattress, they may begin experiencing neck and back pains.
