We’re not just here to sell you a mattress and take your money, we’re also a family that likes to get to know our valued customers. Often the talk is about the weather, especially since it’s gotten suddenly cold. As we head into a winter season here in our beloved South Africa, we got to ask our customers what they do to warm up on a cold winter’s night. We have some suggestions you may like too!

Since your body prefers a cooler core temperature whilst sleeping, this is its signal that it’s time to hit the pillow, and generally, you will fall right to sleep. However, if it’s too cold then you will struggle to get that balance right to get comfortable. Here are a few suggestions that could sort that out. And believe us, we have found this to work!

  1. Enjoy a beverage before bed. Your choice nightcap could consist of perhaps a glass of wine or even a freshly brewed cup of caffeine-free herbal tea. Either or, it will raise your body’s core temperature, and we believe both have health benefits.
  2. Besides a nightcap by the warm fire which is always a winner, one should consider a few simple stretches before bed to get the blood circulation going. If you’re not a gym bunny, stretching should still be on your activities list, for a variety of benefits such as those of you who sit all day at a desk, or those who are in a physically demanding job. For an easy illustrative guide, just do a quick Google search for full body stretches.
  3. Having a hot shower or bath before bed not only feels revitalizing, it warms your core temperature which also aids in easier digesting of your supper. Just remember not to eat a heavy meal too close to bedtime. Rumour has it that when eating late at night or too close to bedtime the body doesn’t burn the calories as fast as during the day, resulting in converting it to fat. This is a debatable topic, so we would suggest eating your last proper meal of the day 2 to 3 hours before bed. If you feel the need to snack, perhaps a glass of warm milk and a teaspoon of peanut butter if you’re not allergic to either. Both have benefits of increasing growth hormone production whilst you sleep – You know – the stuff that keeps you looking and feeling young!
  4. Since our arms generally tend to find their way from under the duvet, consider a long sleeve sleep top. Nothing worse than the feeling of cold skin to suddenly wake your senses at night! Trousers are also an option and add some woollen socks and you’re about ready to take on the crisp nights on Mount Everest! Just remember that if you are layering, you may get too hot and that would be counterproductive.
  5. Speaking of layers, having a duvet or a blanket that drapes to the floor is one of the best ways to retain heat under the sheets. There are a number of great options for winter duvets, just bear in mind you would want to get something that at least breathes so you don’t get too hot.  TIP: Another great idea that helps is blocking a cold draft that tends to slip from under doors.
  6. Finally, one of the struggles people face in winter, are cold feet! Besides woollen socks, a warm water bottle really helps. However, that tends to get kicked out of the bed. So, snuggling up close to your partner is a prized choice. Don’t be too surprised if you get a pleasant response. Because hey, life is full of opportunities, grab them while you can!

For everything else, there’s MasterCard. So bring it along and spoil yourself with a new bed this winter. You deserve it!
